In the past twelve years, there have been political changes in line with the shift of state
political system in Indonesia from authoritarian toward democratic state. Along with this
situation there has been a process of media liberalization, which is among other things
indicated by proliferation of mass media industry, both print and electronic media. In this
regard, mass media seem to have freedom to construct and provide any discourses to their
audience. National security is one of discursive constructions, which has been emerged in
Indonesian mass media. It could be said that during the Reform Era media have gained a
kind of power to talk freely about the state, including about national security. Different with
the previous era, wherein the discourse of national security was state-centered, during the
